John J. Flynn Elementary, located in the New North End of Burlington, opened in 1953 on a site that had previously been a Starr Farm hayfield.
Today Flynn has 360 students in preschool through fifth grade. The Flynn theater program was started eleven years ago by dedicated parent volunteers who believed that drama could impact students in positive ways. Many Flynn students live in households with economic challenges ? so many, in fact, that every student in the school receives free lunch and breakfast under the Community Eligibility Provision of the school lunch program.

Participating in a community play or theater group is beyond the financial means of most households, but any child (grades 3-5) can participate in the school play. No child is turned away, even those considered to have limited English proficiency (which is 18% of the school). The Flynn PTO helps to raise money for the costs of the play through grants and other means. The goal is to raise at least half through donations or grants ($2,500). The students who do not participate are able to see a school performance and experience live theater. It becomes a community event in which the entire Flynn community can share and learn from and remember for years to come.

Don Wright, of Very Merry Theatre, will work with Flynn students to stage a production of Willy Wonka on November 8-9, 2018. This school play, produced with the support of the Flynn PTO, teachers, and Very Merry Theatre, provides an opportunity for more than 100 children in grades 4-5 to participate in any way they choose -- as performers, set builders, or stage crew members. Grade 3 students also participate as chorus members.

Each year, we hire Don Wright and Very Merry Theater to produce, manage, practice with students, and deliver our performance. The artists consist of a singing coach, dancing coach, acting coach, and artist who helps crew create props and sets. They educate students about the process of performing, creating props and sets, making costumes, theatrical makeup, and running lines of a script. We would not have a theater performance at the Elementary level if it were not for the employment of Don and Very Merry Theater. We appreciate their time and effort. Many of our students go on to join the BHS drama club because of early exposure and positive experiences in theater at Flynn School.

Please help us support our Flynn School Community!
Thank You
Flynn PTO
