Love your town? We do too!
The Richmond Historical society invites YOU to join us for a pot-luck supper in the fellowship hall of the Richmond Congregational Church on Saturday November 9 at 6pm. Our 2019 volunteers at the Round Church will be honored, and then we will have a presentation, beginning around 7:15. Local history comes to life with our programs - You will enjoy this one!
RHS archivist Karen Yaggy will lead a program entitled S.H. Davis, Richmond's "Go To" Lawyer in the 1870's
Civil War pensions and charges of desertion, seizure of hard liquor at the Richmond railroad station, divorce from a patent medicine "doctor", and a lawsuit for poorly maintained roads are just a few of the cases handled by Richmond's lawyer, S.H. Davis, during the year of 1873.
Did you ever think about how copies were made before typewriters and Xerox machines? We have copies of his legal correspondence for you to see!
You will hear excerpts from this and related newspaper articles describing the lawyer's work 146 years ago.
Bring a dish, and pay $2 to cover drinks, salad, and dessert, if you wish. Or just come to the program if you prefer! The program is free, and the Richmond Congregational Church is handicapped accessible.
We hope to see YOU there!
