The Burlington Firefighters Association, Local 3044 will be hosting a regional training seminar this Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Burlington High School, 52 Institute Road beginning at 8:00 AM. The full day training will cover two areas that are of prime importance to the Fire Service today. The morning session centers on life within the firehouse. The factors that distinguish between a place of learning where skills and company unity are developed and the negative experience that can result from interpersonal issues which destroy a company from within are explored. The afternoon class describes best practices to develop an effective fire attack through coordinated Engine and Truck Company Operations.
The seminar will feature Captain Michael Dugan, FDNY Retired. Captain Dugan was a 27 year veteran of FDNY, serving as Captain of Ladder123, in Crown Heights Brooklyn, where he retired. As a Lieutenant, Dugan served in Ladder Company 42 in the South Bronx. While a firefighter in Spanish Harlem on Ladder 43 he received the Harry M. Archer Medal, the FDNY’s highest award for bravery. Captain Dugan has been involved in the Fire Service for 39 years as a firefighter, officer, instructor, lecturer, and mentor. He also is a contributing editor to “Firehouse” and “Fire Engineering” magazine on Truck Company Operations.
More than 200 firefighters from Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, and New York will be attending this seminar. Training opportunities of this caliber are rare in this region and it is notable that so many area departments are sending members.
The efforts of many members within the Burlington Firefighters Association were crucial to planning and facilitating this seminar. The Burlington Fire Department Training and Safety Division also collaborated with Local 3044 providing logistical support with the venue. BFFA Local 3044 would like to express our gratitude to the Burlington Fire Department, Burlington High School, and the City of Burlington for supporting and encouraging a culture of continuing education and safety for our members.
