Professor William Edelglass of Marlboro College will speak on The History of the Concept Race, hosted at The Church of the Good Shepherd, 39 Washington St Barre. Sponsored by the VT Humanities Council. The first European to divide the peoples of the world into distinct races came in the 17th century. The Sami people of northern Scandinavia were considered one of four races. A second was made up of all Native Americans, Europeans, South Asians and Northern Africans. All Sub-Saharan Africans were a third race and the fourth was East Asians. How did such a bizarre distinction among groups of people develop into one of the most historically significant ideas of the modern world? Professor William Edelglass will trace the intellectual history of the concept of race in the west, from its prehistory to today.
