EVENT ONE: On-Farm Slaughter Workshop with Mary Lake
Friday, October 18, 2019 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM (EDT)
Have you considered raising your own animals for the freezer? This is an educational workshop on the processing of two pigs from the farm guided by Mary Lake. Mary Lake is a professional itinerant slaughterer, butcher and sheep shearer who lives in Tunbridge. We will be actually experiencing the whole on-farm process during this workshop.
Mary learned her craft through several years of full-time work with the Royal Butcher in Randolph, which is a USDA-inspected processing facility. Her expertise and engagement through testimony was essential for the new improvements to the On-Farm Slaughter law. At the workshop, Rural Vermont will present the requirements of the updated law and give room for questions and discussion.
Ticket Price: $25 for a Vermont Grass Farmers Association or Rural VT Member or $40 for non-members
Registration: https://marylake_onfarm_slaughter.eventbrite.com, Registration is required.

EVENT TWO: Grazing & Land Management Pasture Walk & Workshop with Jenn Colby
Friday, October 18 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm
**Are you a prospective or beginning farmer interested in better understanding how to get started with grazing livestock?
**Are you a land owner or community member seeking ways to support beneficial agricultural choices and water quality in your local community?
**Are you a land owner or manager wondering where to start with rehabilitation of run-down or abandoned land?
This workshop and pasture walk hosted by Jenn Colby of Howling Wolf Farm will include an overview of the principles of soil health on the land, as well as highlighting the actions she has taken to improve her own farm using primarily targeted sheep grazing and other low cost, low input management methods. Jenn has operated Howling Wolf Farm at three locations in the Randolph area since 2000, and has worked with a variety of livestock and land conditions in that time. She manages grazing and livestock technical assistance and educational programs statewide as part of UVM Extension's Center for Sustainable Agriculture.
At the conclusion of the pasture walk, attendees are welcome to continue the conversation over lamb stew and other refreshments.
