A small note about the Baul tradition with a little of our stories, backgrounds and our gurus.
Bauls are wandering ministrels, poet-philosophers and holy madmen, spiritual seekers in search of true love and pure freedom. This ancient oral tradition comes from rural Bangladesh and West Bengal, India, with influences from Sufism, Tantra and Vajrajana Buddhism. The essence of Baul is universal- Bauls do not believe in boundaries of nationality, gender, race or religion- only pure love.
Polash is an artist and musician from Bangladesh. He encountered the Baul path as a teenager, drawn to the freedom of the music and purity of the philosophy. His guru Fakir Daulad Shah, was a master of Fakir Lalon Shai's lineage. Pavitra is a poet from India raised in New York City. She has been in India since receiving a Fulbright in 2014 to work with shadow puppeteers, cantastoria artists and women storytellers. The journey led back to her birthplace and to her guru, Parvathy Baul. Pavitra and Polash have been based in Santiniketan, India in a small mud-hut studio, where they nurture music, art and Baul practice under the guidance of their gurus.
With the ongoing changes at our co-op and new possibilities the Bread And Puppet Possibilitarian woodcut Banner exhibit celebrates our future!
Co-op News
The Co-op needs to make significant changes to our business to put us on a solid financial footing. The financials for this year so far have shown much improvement, but we are still running with bare bones staff. We need to further strengthen our financial position. Over 70 members attended the Sept. 14 meeting at Plainfield Opera House to discuss options for the future. The Board presented 4 options to the members for consideration:
1. Relocate to Route 2
2. Partner with Hunger Mountain Co-op
3. Change the store to an employee owned cooperative
4. Cultivate the current business (same location, same business model)
