Have you ever wondered why Huntington's villages developed the way they did? Or where the industry was located in Huntington in the mid 19th Century?
Come join your neighbors for a presentation and learn the answers to these questions at the Huntington Historical and Community Trust Annual Meeting on Thursday, October 24th at 7:00 p.m. at the Town Hall.
Jane Dorney, a local consultant in historical geography, will give an illustrated presentation called The Evolving Cultural and Natural Landscape of Huntington. Dorney has walked through the woods, hills, and hollows of Huntington reading its landscape in preparation for this event. She has connected with the people who weave the fabric of our community, and delved into historic documents and maps of the town. The result will be an illustrated talk that takes a deep look at how and why the Huntington landscape came to look like it does. She will present on three distinct sections of the town landscape: from the high elevation forestry, recreation and tourism, to the mid-elevation hill farming, and finally the villages and industry along the river. Included will be photos, maps and stories of the old carriage roads to the top of Camel's Hump, CCC camps, stone walls, conifer plantations, water-powered saw mills and grist mills, and much more. The close connections between the cultural and natural landscapes will be woven throughout the presentation.
This presentation is open to the public. There will be a brief HHCT Annual Meeting at 7:00 followed by Dorney's presentation. Light refreshments will be provided. Email hhctvt@gmail.com with any questions.
