The Biodiversity Inventory that was completed last year had good news: no massive infestations of invasive plants were found in the Hogback Mountain Conservation Area. But the not-so-good news was that several dozen individual alien invasive plants were found, meaning the invasives have gotten a toe-hold throughout the 600-acre forest. On Monday morning, Oct 14, from 10:00-noon, we'll take a hike, maybe even off-trail, to check out some of the locations where invasive plants have been found, and if we locate them, we'll uproot them to try to prevent them from spreading. Buckthorn will be a particular focus, because at this time of year it still sports bright green leaves, making it easy to spot among the lovely yellows, oranges, and reds of the native plants. If we do find invasive plants, this will be a good chance to learn to identify them so that you can spot them in your own neighborhood. If we don't find any, hooray! In either case, it is a wonderful time of year to go for a walk in the woods. Join us! Meet at 10:00 in the field behind the white distillery building on the south side of Route 9 just west of the gift shop.
