VT's Nuclear Waste/Environmental Injustice!

Past event
Oct 1, 2019, 5:30 to 8:30 PM

Following a POTLUCK meal (5:30), four presenters will showcase problems with the current plan to haul nuclear waste from VT's now-shuttered Yankee plant near Brattleboro to sites in west TX and NM. The speakers will address the vulnerabilities of these proposed sites for High Level Nuclear Waste. No place in the nation meets the scientific criteria for (very, very!) long term waste storage. These particular sites also raise issues of environmental racism: communities now targeted for nuclear waste disposal are low-income, rural places populated primarily by POC and Native Americans. These communities face unconscionable choices between short term economic survival versus health and safety. The event will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 64 State St., Montpelier, VT.

Associated issues of transportation and leakage, possible accidents or terrorism, all will be discussed. Come and see the mock nuclear waste cask that's now touring New England! Sponsors are the Vermont Yankee Decommissioning Alliance (Montpelier area), Citizens Awareness Network, & Safe and Green Coalition.
