Catamount Arts is pleased to present Sachiko Akiyama, Terra Incognita, an exhibition of sculpture and prints on view in the Fried Family Gallery from September 6-November 1, 2019. A wine and cheese reception will be held on Saturday, September 28 from 5-6:30pm, with remarks by the artist at 5:30pm. All are welcome to attend. At 6:30, guests will gather at 142 Eastern to sit down to a family-style dinner with Sachiko.
Sachiko Akiyama attributes the quiet and reserve of her work to an eastern sensibility, citing a ''belief in attaining knowledge not through action, but through silence, introspection, and passivity." The hand carved wooden figures featured in Terra Incognita—some portraits of family, some self-portraits—exemplify this introspective approach. "I've always been interested in making something psychological," she remarks. Using concrete materials to explore spiritual meaning, Akiyama allows viewers to interpret her pieces in multiple ways by entering a dream-like world in which more happens beneath the surface that might first appear.
Sachiko Akiyma has been called "Top Ten Artist to Watch" by the Boston Globe. Enjoy a unique art and dining experience. Learn about the tools she uses and her deep connection to sculpture, while enjoying a farm-to-table menu inspired by the artist.
Our meal is curated by local chef Sarah Spence inspired by Sachiko. Chef Sarah Spence has worked at the Rabbit Hill Inn, Karme Choling and now at Bread&Butter. Sachiko enjoys local farm-to-table food. We will begin our evening with themed "Terra Incognita" turnovers. Then continue onto braised Misty Knoll chicken and seasonal roasted vegetables sourced that morning at St Johnsbury's farmers market. This will be served with Bread&Butter baguette. Our evening will finish with a seasonal apple crumb cake with apples from Burtt's Orchard and homemade vanilla ice cream with cream provided by Thomas dairy. This is a BYOB event, but everyone will be served Sachiko's favorite beverage, seltzer with lime.
