If you have been wondering what can be done here in Cabot about climate change and how you can help the students in the Climate Strike this Friday, September 20, 2019, at 1:30 pm on Cabot Commons, read on. If you continue to think climate change is a Chinese conspiracy theory or a hoax, we are not going to try to change your mind. Please go on to the next article.

The single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Vermont is gas for automobiles, according to the Vermont Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Report conducted by the Pollution Control Division of the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources in 2010. Emissions from transportation in Vermont is larger than electricity production, fuel use in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, industrial processes, waste management, and agriculture.

Here in Cabot, people drive to jobs in St. Johnsbury, Barre, Montpelier, even Burlington. They are alone in their car for a lot of the trips they make back and forth to work. If we could put more people in fewer cars, we would be addressing Vermont's biggest climate problem.

We have a new group in Cabot called Cabot Car Connection. Our goal is to help people in and around Cabot act on climate change by reducing the number of vehicle trips made with only one person in the car. We'll do this by helping make connections between people who commute out of town, by facilitating and building "car stops" where people can be protected from the weather when they're waiting, and by linking our service to others that are growing around the state, like the Hitching Post between Montpelier and Worcester. You can read about that by clicking this link: https://350vermont.org/the-hitching-post-comes-to-rural-vermont/.

If you want to be part of it, you can join on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/CabotCarConnection/. We will also have a sign-up table at the Climate Strike on the Common this Friday starting at 1:30. We'll make sure the table is still open when commuters come through at the end of the working day. Please join the group and tell us if you want to be part of the Steering Committee. We need help!
