Tomorrow we will be discussing chapter 4, "Why am I always being asked to 'check my privilege'?", from Ijeoma Oluo's book _So You Want to Talk About Race_. We will meet at the Waterbury Public Library from 6:30-7:30.
Oluo defines privilege as "an advantage or set of advantages that you have that others do not" (p. 59). We all have some areas of relative advantage. If our privilege is left unexamined, we miss the ways it shapes our worldview and may make us insensitive to ways we (unintentionally) contribute to systems of inequality.
I have worked hard to achieve certain things in my life but I have experienced a lot of unearned advantages too. Years ago I came across a helpful article titled _White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack_, which leads with the quote "I was taught to see racism only in individual acts of meanness, not in invisible systems conferring
dominance on my group." Consider checking out the powerful list of daily effects of white privilege there: https://www.racialequitytools.org/resourcefiles/mcintosh.pdf
Please join us tomorrow, whether you are a regular or first timer, read the chapter or nay, are curious or skeptical or both. All are welcome and kiddos always have something to do at the library.
