One-hundred-and-forty-one years ago, the infamous "Carr murder" took place in Calais on remote Hawkins Ledge in the northwest corner of town. Jill Mudgett, Ph.D., a cultural historian who teaches at Community College of Vermont and Northern VT University-Johnson, has done extensive research on the murder of William Murcormuck by Royal Carr. On Monday evening, September 16, at 7pm, she will give a presentation at the Post Office Building in East Calais Village.
The program is sponsored jointly by the Calais and East Montpelier Historical Societies. Calais residents may remember historian Erlene Leonard's account of this incident, which is well-documented in court records, and briefly recounted on pp 111-113 of Forever Calais by Weston Cate, Jr.
As a cultural historian, Jill Mudgett has an interest in the connection between the people and the environment of northern New England, and she enjoys public history outreach.
Prior to Jill's talk, a potluck supper will be held at 6:00pm at the same location. Bring a plate and utensils and whatever food you wish to contribute. The public is welcome to attend any or all of the evening's activities. The two historical societies will each hold a brief business meeting following the program. Membership information will be available or can be had by responding to this post.
