The problems facing democracies here and around the world will be the subject of a Sept. 11th lecture in Stowe, Vermont. Jon Margolis, a long-time columnist and the national political correspondent for the Chicago Tribune, will present " Don't Panic but Democracy May Be Dying" the second of nine Fall Series lectures sponsored by the Lamoille Valley Osher Lifelong Learning Institute on Wednesday Sept. 11 at the Commodores Inn, 823 S. Main Street, Stowe. Sessions start promptly at 1:30 p.m.
Mr. Margolis is the author of several books including " The Last Innocent Year: America in 1964". His columns have appeared in The New York Times, Orlando Sentinel, New York Daily News and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in addition to articles in the New Republic, The New York Times Magazine, Esquire and the American Prospect. He has also appeared on Vermont radio and television programs.
In this lecture he cautions that while it is always wise to be wary of doomsayers who insist things are different this time, there are credible scholars who worry that democracy, as we understand it, may be outmoded. Things are happening that support their concerns, and not just in America.
The Fall Series membership for the eight remaining lectures is $30. Individual tickets for one lecture is $5. Refreshments will follow the presentation.
