The City of St. Albans and the Northwest Healthy Roots Collaborative are inviting greater St. Albans community members to attend a 1.5-day community workshop. Attendants will focus on the topic of local food and its potential for strengthening the local economy, supporting healthier people and neighborhoods, and revitalizing St. Albans downtown. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Northern Boarder Regional Commission have selected St. Albans City for the Local Foods, Local Places technical assistance program, which will result in an action plan for strengthening the local food economy and enlivening the downtown.
Community participation and knowledge of the local area is needed to help make this event a success. The workshop will bring together many key stakeholders from throughout the region and state to develop an action plan primarily around, but not limited to, increase access to healthy, local food; support existing and establish new, local distribution channels to support small-scale agriculture; increase the number of outlets in St. Albans City purchasing local; incorporating local food messaging into downtown plans, branding, and events.
The workshop will include presentations on community livability and the roles that local food plays in supporting it, plus small group working sessions and discussions on the community's vision and goals, and specific actions for reaching them. The workshop will lay out an action plan for moving forward.
