1800 and Froze to Death: the Cold Year of 1816

Past event
Sep 19, 2019, 6:30 to 7:30 PM

Please note change of subject for lecture on September 19 at the Hancock Free Public Library. Instead of the previously announced topic "Women and the Civil War," noted historian Howard Coffin will speak on the strange series of events that took place in Vermont in 1816, "1800 and Froze to Death: the Cold Year of 1816." The year without summer brought frosts every month, dark skies, and mysterious lights, as well as failed crops, scarce food, and religious revivals. Please join us for a fascinating look at what happened in Vermont, and around the world, in 1816. A Vermont Humanities Council Speakers Bureau event, the lecture is hosted by Friends of the Hancock Free Public Library, and takes place in the Hancock Town Hall, 1091 Vermont Rt. 100, at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 19. Free, open to the public, and accessible. Call 802-767-4651.
