Senior Center field trip to Ohavi Zedek synagogue and the Lost Shul Mural

The Richmond Community Senior Center is sponsoring a visit to the Ohavi Zedek synagogue on Thursday, September 12, from 10 am to 11 am.

The story is a fascinating one. Put together Lithuanian Jewish immigrants settling in Burlington's Old North End in the 1880s, a young artist recruited to paint a mural to hang over the altar of the old synagogue, the mural walled over for decades, but eventually rescued, and now gracing the entrance to Ohavi Zedek. This mural is a rare example of a folk tradition that was utterly destroyed in the Holocaust; there are fragments of such murals in Canada, but lo and behold, here in Burlington we have one intact. It combines elements of Lithuanian Jewish folk art and theater design, a striking combination of color and symbolism. Moving the mural was a feat of engineering; restoring it is an ongoing process.

The visit is scheduled for Thursday, September 12 at 10:am. Please sign up ahead of time at rcsc@gmavt.net so that we will know how many our guide can expect. There is no charge.

The synagogue is located at 188 North Prospect Street in Burlington. Parking is available. For those who want to carpool, please meet at the green in Richmond at 9:00.
