How did thousands of Vermont women sustain the home front while 35,000 Vermont men were on the battlefields during the Civil War? Historian Howard Coffin, based on diaries and letters, tells the story of women in Vermont who kept farms going, worked in factories, served as nurses, and more, during the years 1861-1865. This Vermont Humanities Council Speakers Bureau event, hosted by The Friends of the Hancock Free Public Library, will be held at 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, September 19, in the Hancock Town Hall (1091 Vermont Rte. 100, Hancock), and is accessible to people with disabilities, free, and open to the public.
