Nationally acclaimed Vermont writer Emily Bernard will speak on her new book "Black Is The Body" at the Worthen Library's 13th Annual Vermont Author Talk on Friday, August 23rd at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free. Please join us!

As heard on WBUR's On Point and reviewed on NPR's Fresh Air, Ms. Bernard's new book looks at race - in a fearless, penetrating, honest, true way - in twelve telltale, connected, deeply personal essays. "Black Is The Body" is currently featured on Oprah's 50 Buzziest Books of 2019.

"In 'Black Is The Body' Bernard proves herself to be a revelatory storyteller of race in America who can hold her own with some of those great writers she teaches." -- Maureen Corrigan

"The book's embracing warmth is particularly welcome given the difficulty of the issues it explores and the poisonous acrimony of so much of our public discourse about race relations." -- Seven Days

Emily Bernard holds a Ph. D. in American Studies from Yale University and is currently the Julian Lindsay Green and Gold Professor of English at the University of Vermont. Her work has appeared in The American Scholar, The Boston Globe Magazine, Creative Nonfiction, Green Mountains Review, Oxford American, Ploughshares, The New Republic, and theatlantic.com. Her essays have been reprinted in Best American Essays, Best African American Essays, and Best of Creative Nonfiction.
