The Stern Center for Language and Learning announces that Dr. Mark Seidenberg will be the guest speaker at its 36th Annual Meeting at 8 a.m. on October 10, 2019, at the Holy Family Parish Center in Essex Junction.

Dr. Seidenberg gained international recognition after the publication of "Language at the Speed of Sight: How We Read, Why So Many Can't, and What Can Be Done About It" (2017, Basic Books), in which he calls for changes in the way literacy is taught to children. Seidenberg was the catalyst for the Stern Center's professional learning initiative for educators, Lead to Read, which combines a comprehensive online course in reading for educators with transformational coaching to improve student outcomes. Since 2018, more than 100 Vermont educators have participated in the multi-year project, yielding positive results in children's literacy skills.

Seidenberg is the Vilas Research Professor and Donald O. Hebb Professor in the department of psychology at the University of Wisconsin. He is a cognitive scientist/neuroscientist/psycholinguist who has devoted his career to studying language, reading and dyslexia. He earned a Ph.D. at Columbia University and conducted postdoctoral research at the Center for the Study of Reading. His academic appointments include McGill University and the University of Southern California, where he taught psychology, linguistics, and neuroscience. Since 2001 he has taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he runs the Language and Cognitive Neuroscience Lab with Maryellen MacDonald, Ph.D.
