Part of a series--attend one or both classes (root distilling will take place October 12th).

Join our in-house alchemist, Hannah Mitchell, for this experiential, day-long distillation workshops. You can join us for one or both dates (see above) for a more complete experience. The focus will be on crafting hydrosols–also known as flower waters–which are a product of the same process that yields essential oils, yet are far more sustainable to make and use.

Using the ancient alchemical method of distillation in a large copper alembic, you'll learn the process from start to finish–choosing and harvesting aromatic plants, setting up the still, watching and assessing the process, filtering and bottling. In addition to capturing the hydrosol, you'll learn how to separate the essential oils and see just how precious these popular substances are. Hannah will talk about safety, sustainability, history, plant selection and harvest, herbal actions and medicinal uses.

This class will be very interactive and packed with information. You'll distill one plant on each date a leaf/flower and a root, respectively. The plants you work with will depend on what's in peak perfection on the given date, but might include friends like mugwort, lemon balm, lavender and/or angelica. Participants will get to take home a bottle of the hydrosol you make together. The remaining product will be sold in support of VCIH's sliding-scale herbal clinics–a win-win for all!
