Spoon Carving Workshop at Rokeby Museum
August 10 and 11, 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Join Colchester resident Randall Henson for two days of handwork in this green woodworking class. Participants will carve spoons out of recently harvested birch using an axe for preparing the wood, and hand-held Swedish carving knife and bent knife for detail work. Under the experienced instructor's direction, students will consider spoon design with an eye on beauty and an emphasis on function, learning about carving techniques, safety, wood and wood grain, tool sharpening, drying and finishing. All levels of woodworking experience are welcome, and tools are provided. The workshop includes an examination of 18th century carved spoons and door latches in the Rokeby collection.
