Historian Bunni Putnam will present "Prohibition: The Failed Experiment" at the Springfield Art & Historical Society on Saturday, August 17 at 2:00 pm at the SAHS Facility, 65 Route 106, North Springfield, Vermont.

Find out the "where, why, and what went wrong" with the 18th Amendment, nationally, state-wide, and in Springfield. This amendment created more problems than could have been imagined. Bootlegging and rum-running led to stealing, murders, prison sentences. and moonshine deaths.

As early as 1815 the prohibitionists were forming societies and unions trying to do away with "drinking" for the good of the people. The first "dry" town in the country was in Maine in 1840 but, as the settlers moved west, so did the "problem" and so did the prohibitionists. They used every method they could to combat alcohol including prayer, hymns, and a hatchet. This is a history about how the amendment came to be and why it was repealed.
