The Stowe Jewish Film Festival presents Joseph Pulitzer, Voice of the People, Wednesday evening, July 31, 7:00 pm, at Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center in Stowe. Doors open at 6 pm and light refreshments will be served. Q & A session with journalist David Goodman will follow the movie.
This film tells the story of an American icon who spoke of "fake news" over one hundred years ago. Joseph Pulitzer, a Jewish immigrant from Hungary, began as a gifted journalist before becoming a successful publisher and businessman. The Pulitzer Prize for journalistic and literary excellence is named for him. Pulitzer's story reveals a personal and professional battle for freedom of the press. At the end of Pulitzer's life, President Theodore Roosevelt sued him for "criminal libel," citing the ongoing investigation of potential corruption in the building of the Panama Canal. Pulitzer's little-known Supreme Court victory in 1911 established an important precedent for the First Amendment right to free speech and resonates strongly in today's fraught political environment.
Tickets are $10 in advance (https://www.sprucepeakarts.org/events/) and $15 at the door.
