Pierce's Store will be screening another wonderful Vermont-centered film -- Nothing Like Dreaming -- on Thursday July 18th at 7 pm in the Garage Annex. Filmmaker Nora Jacobson, best known for The Vermont Movie, has agreed to join us for the viewing, allowing for Q&A after the film.
Set in Montpelier, Nothing Like Dreaming, released in 2004, is a poignant coming-of-age film, with a vibrant debut performance by a young Vermont teen, Morgan Bicknell. The film explores her relationship with an emotionally challenged outcast living on the fringes of Montpelier. Morgan Bicknell's character, Emma, is the daughter of a state senator and a folk singer (played by singer/songwriter Rachel Bissex who died of breast cancer one year after the film was released). Many Vermont legislators participated in the film, including then-senator Peter Welch (who plays the governor) and then-senator Phil Scott.
A centerpiece of the film is a fire organ (orgue à feu) created by French sculptor Michel Moglia for the movie. As they are heated by blowtorches, the pipes begin to resonate, creating otherworldly sounds.
Seating in Pierce's Garage is limited, and we anticipate the event will sell out. Pierce's is offering advance tickets which can be obtained at the store or online by going to www.eventbrite.com and searching on 'Pierce's Store' (Eventbrite charges a small fee for online orders) . Tickets are sold on a donation basis (suggested donation $10). It is recommended you arrive by 6.45 pm to get a seat. Wine, beer and cider are available for purchase. The film is unrated but contains adult scenes.
