Preview of July 15 Council Meeting

Past event
Jul 15, 2019, 7 to 9:30 PM

Dear Neighbors,

This coming Monday, the City Council will hold its one meeting in the month of July.

We will begin our meeting at 5:30pm with a work session that will include a discussion on the possible uses of the City's proceeds from the sale of Burlington Telecom. As you may recall, the City has the option to invest in the new BT or could use all or part of our share of the proceeds of a variety of current and future needs. It is expected this discussion will take place in executive session.

We have two other expected executive sessions: one on water billing negotiations and the other will be an update on City Place. The work session and executive sessions are anticipated to take place from 5:30 to 7:30pm with the Council meeting beginning immediately thereafter.

Following an annual report from the Burlington Electric Commission, an update on energy efficiency in rental housing from Burlington Electric as per a Council resolution passed in May, and two evening special outdoor entertainment permit on the Marketplace later this month, we have five other items on our deliberative agenda including:

• A BHS student, Kawther Hashim and Ahmed Lateef will give a presentation to the Council and community on an initiative to support Yemini children who are struggling in the violence of war.

• A public hearing and expected vote on parking amendments to our City's ordinance.

• A resolution sponsored by nearly the entire Council regarding racial equity, diversity and inclusion. The resolution would add a standing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee of the Council to oversee implementation of the City's Equity Strategic Plan and the creation of a senior full time position responsible for overseeing, managing and advising other senior City officials on the City's diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives with this position reporting to the Mayor.

• We will be voting on the appointments to the Special Committee on Policing Practices and Policy that we created by resolution in early June.

• Our last item is a resolution to use a portion of the BT proceeds to purchase eight sidewalk tractors.

Please keep in mind that you are always welcome to come to a Council meeting and speak on any topic you wish during public forum. This begins at a time certain of 7:30pm at every Council meeting. You may access the Council agenda at http://www.boarddocs.com/vt/burlingtonvt/Board.nsf/Public Please note that all Council meetings are televised live on BT Channel 317 and streamed live to your computer or phone. Please go to youtube and type in "Burlington City Council meetings" and the live stream will come up.

As always, I welcome your questions and concerns. I hope you are enjoying these wonderful summer days.

My best,
Karen
