4th Annual MOTH NIGHT IN MIDDLEBURY
Tonight! 8pm at the Ilsley Library Meeting room 2 presenters will be showing slides and discussing Vermont's amazing and diverse species of moths followed by a trip, for those interested, to a Middlebury location to see moths come to sheets lit by blacklight . It is a wonderful opportunity to take photographs and explore the creatures that fly after dark! (DO NOT wear a white shirt, you will become a moth's landing pad!) Please join us and expand your world.
This year there are DOOR PRIZES 3 people will win a blacklight bulb to help them on their journey to the "dark side" and 5 people will get a beautiful large vinyl sticker of one of VT's most beautiful moths. One lucky person who think's they've "caught the bug" will go home with a shop light fixture equipped with a 4' blacklight bulbs!
Jennifer Murdoch: ( that's me) is a backyard naturalist whose curiosity was sparked 5 years ago by a friends facebook photo. I looked at moths that first season and the following season talked to the Otter Creek Audubon Society about hosting a moth night for members and the public, this is our 4th annual event. Mothing was almost instantly addicting for me….sheets, lights, photo's, contributions as a citizen scientist to BugGuide and iNaturalist, caterpillar rearing, and this year attendance at a Lepidoptera course (AKA "Moth Camp") ensued! In addition to my slide presentation I will be bringing live specimens and cocoons and pupae which will be passed around the room for close inspection!
JoAnne Russo: This will be JoAnne's 4th year sharing her expertise on Middlebury's Moth Night. Not long ago, JoAnne was, like me, a novice photographing moths at the porch light. A quick study, she's gone on to bring her moth skills to many people and places, including iNaturalist; workshops; and curatorial duties at Cornell University, the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity, and the Vermont state Lepidoptera collection. JoAnne received a BFA in fine art at the University of New Hampshire and spent over 30 years making and selling sculptural baskets, many of which are in major museum collections across the country. She lives in Saxtons River, Vermont, with her husband artist Gerry Biron and two dogs.
