AMASSED & UP-ENDED: DECODING THE LEGACY OF STUFF
Exhibit Opening with Gallery Talk and Featured Speakers
Sunday July 14, 2019 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
What happens when four generations of one family live out their lives in the same house? In the case of Rokeby Museum, alot.
From 1793 to 1961 the Robinson family lived in the historic home that is now one of the centerpieces of the Museum. A family of artists, abolitionists and farmers, and their personal histories were left behind in an astounding collection of objects and written material.
Amassed & Up-ended gathers together an impressive variety of items – some rare, others provocative, and most utterly unique – and places them in a gallery setting in order that they might give voice to the now long-gone Robinson family. "Reading" the artwork, artifacts, and documents for the stories they tell, we expect visitors will also ponder the question of how their own stories will be told by what they leave behind.
Opening day programs explore these questions and more.
2:00 p.m. Gallery Talk
Exhibit curators Jane Williamson, Steve Wetherby, and Catherine Brooks will discuss the many levels of curation at play in Amassed & Up-ended – from the Robinson family's effort to preserve their history, to early caretakers of Robinson memory and the museum, to present-day choices of what to exhibit and how.
3:00 p.m. How to Weed Your Attic: Getting Rid of Junk without Destroying History
Authors Elizabeth Dow and Lucinda Cockerel will provide answers to the question: when someone dies or it's time to move --- or just clean out the attic, garage, or basement - what papers and other things should we save for the sake of history and what can we safely toss? Their book, How to Weed Your Attic, will be available for sale and signing.
