After forty years, Unadilla Theatre, at a gorgeous mountain farm in Marshfield, opens its 2019 season with Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance, or The Slave to Duty.
Let's see now, this comedic opera makes fun of, among other things Britishesque, pirates who drink sherry, orphans who have parents, bored policemen, liberally educated military leaders, love- plain and salty, the upper-class, and miscounted birthdays. A cast of Unadilla regulars and new faces adorns the stage directed by Erik Kroncke, music direction by Mary Jane Austin, and piano by Alison Bruce Cerutti.
Performances of Pirates begin at 7:30 pm, Thursdays through Sundays, June 27 to July 14. Picnicking is welcome on the lawn before the show, where you can watch the Blachy herds of sheep and Highlanders, and a few warm-blood steeds parade through the mountain pastures. Go to Unadilla.org for the season's dates and the six plays in its two theatres.
