Come hear Newbury author and historian Michelle Arnosky Sherburne examine the evidence from the 1957 Orville Gibson murder case on SUNDAY, JUNE 30th at 2:00 PM at BLUE MOUNTAIN UNION SCHOOL. The case has captivated people for six decades. After Newbury farmer Gibson disappeared and later was discovered dead in the Connecticut River, police and media descended on Newbury to solve the mystery. After three years of intense investigation, Newbury residents went silent about the case. In 2015, Sherburne published a 5-part series in the Journal Opinion on her investigations into the murder. She published a second series in 2018. At the program co-sponsored by the Newbury and Ryegate Historical Societies, she will present the information she has amassed in the case.
Sherburne is the author of four books, A Vermont Hill Town in the Civil War: Peacham's Story; Abolition and the Underground Railroad in Vermont; St. Albans Raid; and Slavery and the Underground Railroad in New Hampshire. She worked six months researching and interviewing for the 2015 Gibson Murder Case series, and three years later she worked with the Gibson family for another six months to publish the 2018 series in the Journal Opinion.
