Northeastern U Prof to Discuss Protest and Disobedience

Past event
Jun 21, 2019, 2 to 3 PM

The Burlington Police Department is pleased to partner with the UVM Philosophy Department in organizing a talk at Rights and Democracy about protest, civil disobedience, resistance, and beyond.

Northeastern University philosopher Candice Delmas will be in town tomorrow to discuss her 2018 book, A Duty to Resist. In it, she presents her theories about when different types disobedience are required on her account, and the duties and rationales surrounding more active and disruptive forms of resistance. The chief of police will be on hand to respond to her ideas and to widen the discussion.

Burlington is a politically active city where there is often a tension between the efforts of activists and reformers to deliver a powerful message that gets the results they desire, and the goals of the police to maintain public safety, and engender a respect for the rule of law. A discussion that leads police, activists and protesters to a better mutual understanding of the positions and expectations at work between the government and the people is therefore important and welcome.

We hope to see you tomorrow at 2 PM at Rights and Democracy, 241 N. Winooski, the McClure Multigenerational building
