What Shoes Teach Us: Exploring Footwear from the Stuart Weitzman Collection of Historic Shoes
Costume and textile historian Edward Maeder will present "Walk This Way: Footwear from the Stuart Weitzman Collection of Historic Shoes," at Manchester Community Library on Wednesday June 5, at 7 p.m. Sharing exceptional historic examples from the shoe designer's extensive private collection, Maeder explores the evolution of women's footwear, in parallel with changes in women's lives. This illustrated talk launches the Library's 2019 Summer Wednesdays Series.
Famous for his trademark use of unique materials and his creation of one-of-a-kind, "million dollar" shoes for Oscar nominees, American designer Stuart Weitzman's personal collection of antique shoes was amassed over three decades.
Edward Maeder is a leading costume and textile historian and curator, and the founding director of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto. He has held curatorial positions at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Maeder curated shoe designer Stuart Weitzman's personal collection of historic footwear for an exhibit by the New-York Historical Society (N-YHS) called "Walk This Way," which ran from April to October 2018; he wrote a book complementing the exhibit, published by the N-YHS.
Northshire Bookstore will be on-site to sell copies of Maeder's book, lavishly illustrated with over 180 illustrations.
Manchester Community Library and Northshire Bookstore present Walk This Way. The illustrated talk is free and open to the public. Manchester Community Library is located at 138 Cemetery Ave. in Manchester Center, VT. For more information, contact the Library at 802-362-2607.
