OK, all you intrepid souls who are planning to enter a pie at the Blackfly Pie Contest in Adamant on Saturday, June 1, here's an addendum to the original announcement: think green, think savory, think of a quiche-like pie with veggies that are beginning to fill the stalls at farmers markets and grocery stores. We, the coordinators of this unique event want it known that, in addition to the fruit pies which we all love, the green shoots of fresh thinking about what constitutes a pie would be most welcome. Last year's winning pie, in fact, called "DEET," contained Dutch gouda, Egg, Eggplant, and Tomato and claimed that it killed blackflies dead. Though laws about truth in advertising prevent us from endorsing this claim, we think it's an interesting idea. All pies are sold afterward by the slice. www.blackflyfestival.org.
