Memorial Day Observance at Northfield Common on Monday, May 27th, 10:00 a.m.
You are invited to participate in Memorial Day Observance at Northfield Common . This program is sponsored by the American Legion Sorrel-Maynard Post #63, as it has been for many years.
Memorial Day was first observed during and after the Civil War. It started as an event to honor soldiers and sailors who died during that war. The original National Commemoration Day took place on 30 May 1868. Originally known as Decoration Day, it became a federal holiday in 1971.
Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries, holding family gatherings and participating in parades.
The Americans legion includes local Boy/Girls Scouts during these events. The program includes recognition of participating Gold Star Families, reading of names of citizens who gave their lives in our nation's wars, wreath laying, symbolic flower tossing of into the water of the Dog River for those who died at sea; short speeches and the singing of Taps, a cappella.
Veterans from the Veterans' Place here in Northfield will also participate.
Our Northfield Community is blessed to have many Veterans among us. Please Join us to commemorate the fallen and those who have served and those who continue to serve in our nations military.
