In St. Johnsbury, the Memorial Day observance will be on Monday, May 27th and is organized by the American Legion Post 58 Post Commander Angela Marshall and several activities are planned. All are free and open to the public. At 9:00 AM there will be a brief ceremony with a road closure at the Memorial Bridge on Portland Street followed at 10:00 AM with a parade that starts on Summer Street and proceeds down Main Street to Courthouse Park. Roads will be closed on the route of march. The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Post 793 and its Auxiliary, St. Johnsbury Academy Band, Boy Scout Troop 707, Cub Scouts Troop 007 and others will participate in the parade.
The main observance will occur on the grounds of the Caledonia County Courthouse. The St. Johnsbury Band will perform a concert of marches and patriotic music starting about 9:30 and play until the parade arrives. Wreaths honoring the sacrifice of local military men and women who gave their lives in the service of our country will be placed at each of the monuments. The observance will feature speaker Scott Keene, a Desert Storm combat veteran. A musical salute will be offered by the St. Johnsbury Band and the Academy and a firing squad will render honors, concluding with Taps. Then the parade will continue down Eastern Avenue ending at the American Legion Hall. All are invited to attend.
