Dragon Fire at Millers Run School!

What is Dragon Fire? On May 31st, at 6 to 8 PM in the school gymnasium at Millers Run will be our first Dragon Fire celebration. This celebration incorporates many aspects this year and is a compilation of efforts from three grade levels and many educators as well as the Creative Schools Initiative.

One aspect is the 8th grades Foxfire project. The students had to find a mentor, learn a new skill or cultural aspect of our area and create something that took 20 plus hours outside of school to complete. On top of this is the four written components and video that is required as well.

This year's Dragon Fire celebration also incorporates the culminating project of Miller's Run Middle School's in-depth project with the Creative Schools Initiative.  Helping students explore the difference between a surviving community and a thriving one, teaching artist / composer Evan Premo collaborated with six teachers at the school to create core curriculum that integrates music creation and performance.

Miller's Run sixth grade has creating an orchestra of new instruments made from recycled materials.  They are creating a composition to accompany a slideshow of images of the earth in its transition from thriving to surviving.  Their class partner is the Waste Management District.

Three seventh grade composers are creating a digital soundtrack with live and electronic instruments.   The soundtrack will follow the history of general stores in the Sheffield/Wheelock area. The music, images, and narration will follow the path of a thriving 19th century area through the fall of local industry as the town struggles to survive and will culminate in hope for the future. The rest of the class has created a new billboard for the Wheelock Town Store as well as planting flowers to enhance its look.

Eighth grade students are creating a stop-frame animation film using paper cutouts to show the changing VT landscape over the past 200 years.  Teams of three students are each taking a portion of this history and they will also create soundtracks incorporating both diegetic sounds and non-diegetic music. Their class partner is the Sheffield Historical Society and the Wheelock Historical Society.
