Wildlife Walk at Hinesburg Town Forest
Saturday June 1, 2019, 8:00 – 10:00 AM
End of Economou Road, Huntington
Join Wildlife Biologists Noel Dodge and Andrea Shortsleeve and Chittenden County Forester Ethan Tapper on a wildlife walk at the Hinesburg Town Forest on Saturday, June 1st. Noel and Andrea, both biologists with the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife, will discuss wildlife habitat and natural history while identifying local wildlife species using the Town Forest. The Hinesburg Town Forest is a beloved public property with a history of nearly a century of active forest management, extensive recreational use, and important ecological function, all of which will be discussed on the walk. The property is also the site of an active timber harvest being supervised by Tapper, and we will discuss how this active forest management will affect wildlife habitat and usage of the Town Forest.
Please meet at the end of Economou Road in Huntington at 8:00 AM, where we will park at the plow truck turnaround. The walk will go from 8:00 – 10:00 AM, and will take place rain or shine. Participants should be comfortable walking up to 3 miles, on- and off-trail, at a slow pace. The guided walk is free and participants are encouraged to bring snacks and water and to dress in footwear and clothing appropriate for the weather and season. Binoculars, sturdy footwear, and bug protection are highly recommended. For questions about this walk, please call or email Andrea at (802)-477-2257 or andrea.shortsleeve@vermont.gov
EQIP Training For Landowners and Foresters
June 23, 2019, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
111 West Street, Essex Junction, VT
This workshop will provide guidance on applying for funding from NRCS cost-sharing programs (specifically the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)) for landowners and foresters. These programs can be extremely helpful for landowners looking to improve wildlife habitat opportunities on their property, treat invasive exotic plants, engage in pre-commercial timber stand improvement work and repair unstable forestry infrastructure. However, the process of applying for funding and implementing funded projects can sometimes be challenging for landowners and their consultants to navigate.
Join us for a day of de-mystifying these programs, and giving landowners and foresters the tools required to access these amazing resources. The workshop will consist of a morning "classroom" session, and an afternoon of visiting implemented EQIP projects in the field.
This workshop will be co-sponsored by the Chittenden County Forester, Vermont Woodlands Association, Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and Audubon Vermont. The workshop will be free, but pre-registration is required. Please contact Chittenden County Forester Ethan Tapper at ethan.tapper@vermont.gov or (802)-585-9099 for more information, or to register for the event.
