Fairbanks STEM Lab presents The Science of CRISPR and DIY Genetic Editing
Wednesday, May 22, 12:00pm - 2:00pm
Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium, McGuire Conference Room and STEM Lab
73 Prospect Street, St. Johnsbury, VT
Brown Bag Lunch
Curious about all the talk of gene editing and CRISPR? We will cover the basic biology needed to understand gene editing and how it is done, with a focus on CRISPR. We will also discuss current applications of genetic engineering as well as future possibilities. While we will touch on ethics, the main content will be the science. Some of the equipment used for genetic research will be on hand for demonstrations.
Dr. Kelly Salmon of The New Hampshire Academy of Science (NHAS) will be our keynote speaker. She will give an overview of the history of genetic engineering and the science behind it. The focus will be on CRISPR, the newest and most promising method of genetic modification.
This event is presented by The Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium STEM Lab (Fairbanks STEM Lab) and NHAS.
The Fairbanks STEM Lab is a collaboration between The Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium and NHAS. Its mission is to foster the next generation of STEM leaders by providing authentic STEM research experiences and real world applications of math and technology to students and their teachers from underserved rural communities in the Northeast Kingdom. The Fairbanks Museum now has the only public learning STEM laboratory in the area.
The mission of NHAS is to support the scientific research of New Hampshire middle and high school students and to sponsor their attendance at the annual symposium of the largest scientific organization in the world, the AAAS.
