Join the Williston Central School Mosaic House 4th graders in their presentation of Williston Then & Now, a multimedia project exploring Williston's past and present. The event starts next WED, May 15, at the Williston Central School auditorium at 6 pm.
Williston Central School's Mosaic House 4th graders conducted a yearlong multimedia project focused on Williston's history. These young historians worked on two major projects: 1) a photographic study comparing Williston's past and present; and 2) a documentary featuring oral histories of people with deep Williston ties. Both projects offered the students a glimpse into Williston's past, and an opportunity to reflect on the changes they portrayed.
First, the Mosaic House students observed and re-photographed scenes from historic images. This process served to show the changes that have occurred over the years. With the historical images and re-photographed scenes side-by-side, they worked in small groups to reflect on the changes they saw. Those reflections sit in between the images. Their observations and insights reveal the perspective of our youngest generation about the nature of their town.
Next, the students conducted interviews with residents and long-time workers from Williston. The students prepared the questions they wanted to ask and conducted the interviews themselves. The documentary offers a first-hand account of Williston as it was and how it has changed.
Throughout the year, students learned about the importance of the past and how it influences their lives today. They also fostered a connection with community members from different generations. Though there certainly have been changes, students learned that their history is a shared one.
On Wednesday, we'll be viewing the re-photography project and documentary. Please join us at the WCS auditorium at 6 pm on WED, May 15!
