Mad River Chorale & Friends Sing Carmina Burana Sunday!

Past event
May 5, 2019, 4 PM

Hi Neighbors, Carmina Burana, one of the world's most-performed choral works, will be sung by 100 voices in the Harwood auditorium on Sunday May 5 at 4 pm.

Mad River Chorale, led by our gifted conductor Mary Jane Austin, is joined by our sister ensemble South Burlington Community Chorus, three wonderful soloists (soprano Mary Bonhag, tenor Adam Hall and bass Erik Kroncke), two grand pianos played by the talented Alison Cerutti and Samantha Angstman, and a troupe of five amazing percussionists led by Brian Johnson. (Sorry--no partridge in a pear tree at this time of year.) Erik Kroncke, South Burlington's conductor, will also be leading the group in Randall Thompson's "Alleluia." For advance tickets visit madriverchorale.net or call 496-4781. Tickets will also be available at the door. If you can't make it on Sunday, we will also be singing on Saturday May 4, 7:30 pm, in the Recital Hall, McCarthy Arts Center, St. Michael's College, Rte. 15 Colchester. VIsit sbchorusvt.org for Saturday advance tickets.

About Carmina Burana, "It's a celebration of hope, and enjoyment and heartbreak," explains conductor Mary Jane Austin. "Everything's an extreme. It's a Wheel of Fortune where sometimes you are at the top, and then at the bottom. People talk about it having its bawdy moments, but I enjoy the full spectrum of the human experience that it portrays." This work of Carl Orff, a 20th-century German composer who worked mostly in the United States, based Carmina on earthy Medieval texts, exploring a wide range of topics as contemporary now as they were in the 13th century: fortune and wealth, insecurity of life, pleasures and perils of drinking, gluttony, gambling, and lust — and, of course, the joy of the return of spring.
