Move to Amend Spokesman to Speak in Burlington

Rights and Democracy and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) will host a community forum entitled "We the People vs. Corporate Rule: It's Up to Us!" with guest speaker Greg Coleridge, outreach director of the Move to Amend (MtA) campaign. Part history lesson and part heart-felt call to action, the event will be at the McClure Multicultural Center, 241 N. Winooski Ave., Burlington VT on Friday, May 3rd, at 6 pm. Free, refreshments provided.

Coleridge's presentation will explore how corporations having constitutional rights are the roadblock to the meaningful solutions we seek in healthcare, education, climate change, workers rights, clean air and water, community rights, and much more. Greg addresses what can be done locally to overturn this trend to reverse the Citizens United Supreme Court decision.

The 2010 ruling in Citizens United v. FEC opened the floodgates to unlimited corporate spending on elections. Coleridge will help local residents understand the history behind the recent decision and how they can work to abolish "Corporate Personhood" and reestablish a government of, by, and for the people.

"Corporate Personhood" commonly refers to court-created precedent that gives corporations constitutional rights intended solely for human beings. Move to Amend is a long-term effort to make the U.S. Constitution more democratic.

The forum will focus on how Burlington can join the national movement against Corporate Personhood. Coleridge will provide information about the issue and facilitate a discussion about local action in Burlington, Vermont, and communities across the United States to win the amendment campaign through grassroots mobilization.

"We are a diverse coalition with deep roots in communities nationwide. We recognize that amending the Constitution to restore the power of the people over corporations will not be easy, but we know correcting the Supreme Court is imperative to the progress of our nation," states the MtA website.
