Annual Burlington Dismas Community Celebration

Past event
May 5, 2019, 4 to 7:30 PM

Two Burlington Dismas Houses exist to "Reconcile former prisoners with society, and society with former prisoners." Each year a Community Celebration is held to raise money for the houses and to honor the Dismas community of donors, volunteers and residents. This year's celebration will be held on Sunday, May 5th, at the UVM Alumni House at 61 Summit Street, from 4:00 to 7:30. In addition to the best silent auction in a 50-mile radius, there will be scrumptious hearty appetizers, a cash bar and a guest speaker, Cindy Shank, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison in Michigan under the mandatory minimum guidelines for being associated with a boyfriend who was a drug dealer. Between the time of the drug deal and her arrest, she had turned her life around, married and had three daughters. Nevertheless, she served nine of the 15 years and was finally granted clemency by President Obama. As you can see, she has quite a story to tell. Her brother made a documentary about her experience that can be seen on HBO, entitled "The Sentence."
