Tour a Historic Train Station Turned Energy Eff. Home!

Apr 27, 2019, 10 to 11:30 PM

As part of a series of energy efficient home tours by the Craftsbury, Glover, and Greensboro Energy Committees, the home of local Efficiency VT. Certified home energy auditor, Mark Snyder, will be open to visitors on Sat., April 27th from 10 - 11:30am, at 1066 Main St. in Greensboro Bend. This tour is also part of the Greensboro Energy Action Committee's year-long initiative: Every house a comfortable and efficient home.

Mark earned Efficiency Vermont's "Best of the Best" award in the "Retrofit" category for his conversion of the historic Greensboro Bend train depot into a warm, comfortable, and efficient home. Before the retrofit Mark was burning eleven cords of wood each winter and there were still frozen spots in the house. Now Mark burns only three cords of wood per winter and is snug as can be.

Now your next thought might be, "My house isn't an old train station. Is this really applicable to me?" In short, yes! As Mark would tell you, it's all the same stuff. The priorities in any house are to ventilate it right, air seal it tight, and insulate it where it counts. People who really know what they're doing have a way of making complicated things simple.

Mark is a fourth-generation builder with over 30 years of experience. He is a Master Carpenter, a Building Performance Institute (BPI) Certified Building Scientist, and has been published in Fine Homebuilding. His company VT Energy Audits works with residential and commercial clients to keep their buildings warmer and reduce their utility bills. As the name suggests, energy audits are a big part of their work, but they also do the weatherization work needed, conventional renovations and new construction.

Next Saturday Mark will not only give a tour of his efficient home, but also walk through the principles of how heat, air, and moisture move through a house. He'll demonstrate common ways older buildings leak heat and cost-effective ways to seal up a home so that it's tight, healthy, and cozy. Mark will also be happy to discuss the specifics of your house and arrange a time to do a free walk-through.

Mark will also share information about a local window insert program coming this fall. Window inserts fit snugly in front of your existing windows from the inside and dramatically reduce heat loss, drafts, look beautiful, and are priced affordably on a sliding scale. Essentially, they turn a single pane window into a triple pane window at a fraction of the cost.

Please Join us Saturday April 27th at 10am at 1066 Main St in Greensboro Bend to tour a beautifully restored train station and take the first steps towards making your own home cozier, healthier, and less expensive to heat. If you can't come on Saturday but live in Greensboro area and would like a free walk-though, please contact Mark directly at 802-533-9839 or info@vtenergyaudits.com.
