SOUTH ALBANY, VT. - The Craftsbury, Glover and Greensboro Energy Committees are hosting six consecutive Saturday morning tours of new and weatherized homes. Each tour focuses on energy efficient building contractors and the homes that they have built or weatherized. On Saturday, April 20th the home of Dylan and Eleanor Kinsey at 1289 South Albany Road in South Albany will be open to the public for a 10:00 a.m. tour. Their home was completed in 2018 and is entirely fossil fuel free, with heating and cooling provided by air source heat pumps (also called "minisplits") with heat recovery ventilation to ensure the house is provided with warm fresh air year-round. A 6.7 kW photovoltaic grid-tied solar array was recently installed on the roof, which is expected to produce enough electricity to offset all of the home's energy use. Other energy efficient features include triple pane windows, thermal bridge free assemblies with dense pack cellulose insulation to achieve a high level of air tightness in the home. Dylan and Eleanor focused on selecting materials produced locally that have a low embodied carbon footprint.
After years of living in an old, leaky farmhouse down the road, the Kinseys were thrilled to finally move into a home they built themselves that demonstrates their expertise in building science and green building techniques.
Dylan Kinsey has deep roots in the Northeast Kingdom and started Kinsey Construction LLC in 2005. He has over 20 years of experience in the building trades and comes from a long line of craftsmen. He is a Building Performance Institute Certified Professional, a Passive House Certified Builder, and a member of Efficiency Vermont's Efficiency Excellence Network.
The tour is free and open to the public, starting at 10:00 a.m. and lasting about an hour.
