Eugene Debs, the man who inspired Bernie Sanders, is the subject of the next offering in the Labor Film series at Barre's historic Old Labor Hall, Sunday, April 7, 46 Granite St., Barre, at 7 PM. "American Socialist: The Life and Times of Eugene Victor Debs," presents an impassioned, yet objective history of the founder of the American Socialist Party and the movement that continues to have an impact on our lives today.
Five-time presidential candidate Debs inspired progressive ideas from the New Deal to Sanders' presidential campaigns. A noted orator, Debs was imprisoned for his strongly voiced opposition the World War I. He ran his last presidential campaign, in 1920, from his prison cell.
The film will be followed by a discussion led by Ed Stanak. Stanak is a former president of the Vermont State Employees' Association, 2012 Progressive Party candidate for Vermont Attorney General, and a long-time supporter of the Old Labor Hall.
