VCME's 8th Annual Poetry & Music Concert

The Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble presents it 8th annual Poetry & Music concert on April 5 & 6; this time with a twist. In the past composers have been asked to respond to the poetry of a single poet. This year we've reversed the process. Music has been given to nine of Vermont's finest poets who have been asked to respond to the music. The catch is that the poets knew nothing about the music including the composer, title and circumstances of it's composition. They only had a recording – the sound of the music to go by.
This project was a result of brainstorming by VCME's director, Steven Klimowski and Vermont's former poet laureate, Sydney Lea. Steve chose the music and Syd chose the poets. When all poems were received they collaborated in figuring out how to put it all together.
The poets are Vermont's current poet laureate Chard deNiord, Joan Aleshire, Karin Gottshall, David Huddle, Major Jackson, Sydney Lea, Cleopatra Mathis, Kerrin McCadden and Tony Whedon.
The musicians are: Jane Kittredge - violin; Robin Cameron-Phillips - flute/piccolo; Bonnie Thurber Klimowski - cello and Steven Klimowski - clarinet/bass clarinet.
The composers are: David Gunn, David Feurzeig, Peter Hamlin, Peter Relph, Belinda Reynolds and Allen Shawn. Some of the music was written in response to poems on our previous Poetry & Music concerts, some of the pieces are previous VCME commissions, one piece is a response to the 911 tragedy (Reynolds) and two are new pieces written for this program (Gunn & Relph).
Tickets: by donation but suggested $30.00/$15.00
