If you are concerned about invasive plants in your woods or yard and want to be part of the solution, come to the Waterbury Library on Wednesday evening, April 3rd from 6:30 to 8 pm for an informative talk and workshop. Presenter, Elizabeth Spinney of the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks & Recreation, will speak on how invasive plants can impact our native flora and fauna, and provide next steps for participants to begin to tackle invasive plants on their own property and in the community. Discussion and hands-on activities will focus on learning and practicing identification of common invasive plant species in Vermont, such as barberry, buckthorns, honeysuckles, multiflora rose, and bittersweet.
Whether you are new to just what invasives are, or you are the neighborhood invasive plant detective, there is something in this workshop for any level of gardener.
Elizabeth has worked for Vermont Department of Forests, Parks & Recreation (FPR) since 2014, beginning with the Habitat Restoration Crew, and is now in a role as the Invasive Plant Coordinator for FPR out of Essex Junction. She works with communities, organizations, and other state agencies to provide information about the impact of invasive terrestrial plants, and connects those people to resources for taking action. When Elizabeth isn't pulling up invasive plants, she can be found gardening, birding, crocheting, woodworking, or exploring Vermont.
Call the library at 244-7036 to register as space is limited. If you have specific questions for the presenter regarding invasives, email judi@waterburypubliclibrary.com and she will compile the list for Elizabeth to tailor the program for participants.
The event is co-sponsored by the ARRTI (A River Runs Through It) Garden Club and the Waterbury Library.
