Living like Original Vermonters of the Winooski – Applying the Best of the Past for a Sustainable Future

For thousands of years, First Inhabitants of Vermont lived in harmony with nature, utilizing hundreds of plants and fungi unknown to most people today for food and medicine. Join us to learn from Mike Ather of BackyardWilderness.com how we can use these same native plants and mushrooms, still growing right here in Chittenden County to heal ourselves, regenerate our ecosystem and clean our soil, air and water.

Mike's comment:

In the late 1700's the earliest settlers of Colchester reported finding a great clearing along the banks of the Winooski River where "Indians grew their corn." Very recently Phil Brett and I located what I think is the location of that clearing. Not far away, near the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum, grow more plants once gathered by Native Americans than in any one single place I know. Come and see my photos of these wonderful, edible and medicinal plants and learn how we can use them in our own backyards and neighborhoods to prevent loss of species diversity and create a healthier future for all.
