Governor Peter Shumlin will speak at the April 16, 2014 meeting of the mad River Valley Rotary Club meeting at 7:15 A.M. at the Sugarbush Inn, 1840 Sugarbush Access Road, Warren, Vermont, which is 1.8 miles from Route 100 at the intersection of German Flats Road.
Governor Shumlin is a native Vermonter who was born and raised in Putney, Vermont. After attending local public schools, he attended the Buxton School in Williamstown, Massachusetts and then graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut graduating in 1979. He married in 1989 and has two daughters, before divorcing in 2013.
His interest in public service began in the 1980’s when he served on the Select Board in Putney, Vermont. He has been elected to the Vermont House of Representatives for 1990-93, and then the Senate in 1993-2003. He returned to the family business, Putney Student Trave,l for 2003-2007 and then returned to the Vermont Senate for 2007-2011. In 2002 he ran for Lieutenant Governor and lost to Brian Dubie. In 2010 he ran for Governor and won in a close race, but three out of four of the primary candidates joined his administration. He was inaugurated January 6, 2011. He is noted for his work during Tropical Storm Irene, and his current role as Chair of the Democratic Governors Association.
