"Freedom and Unity, The Vermont Movie" is a unique, six-part documentary on the history and culture of the Green Mountain State. Chapter 3, entitled Refuge, Reinvention and Revolution, will be shown at 7 PM on Thursday, February 21. The location is the South Londonderry Depot Visitor Center on Route 100 at 34 West River Street. There is no cost to attend; donations are appreciated.

Chapters 1 and 2 were shown in November and January, respectively. The organization of the anthology is thematic, not chronological – so whether you've seen any or all chapters, DON'T MISS THIS ONE!

"The Vermont Movie" is a collaboration of three dozen critically acclaimed Vermont filmmakers and historians, led and coordinated into a cohesive whole by award-winning filmmaker Nora Jacobson. Here is how those filmmakers describe the content of Chapter 3:

"In the mid-20th century, political pioneers like Bill Meyer, a Congressman who challenged the Cold War, and Governor Phil Hoff, whose 1962 victory set the stage for historic change, rose to take the lead in state politics. Innovation was everywhere: in the work of "talented tinkerers" like Snow Flake Bentley and Thaddeus Fairbanks, in the rise of IBM, and in the creation of the Interstate highways. We see the pros and cons of the highways--the high price of "eminent domain." Revolution was in the air—rare archival footage provides a vivid look at the "hippies," the realities of communal life and the paths of members of the counter-culture who established roots in Vermont. Who changed whom?"

The showing is a joint presentation of the Friends of the West River Trail, the Londonderry Arts and Historical Society and the Weston Historical Society. The Vermont Community Foundation, the Vermont Humanities Council and the Vermont Arts Council were essential in underwriting the filming and production of "The Vermont Movie".
